The family's money comes from Silver; his great-grandfather founded the SilverFactory. It is probable that the phrase "born with a silver spoon in his mouth" really really annoys him. In 1910, acting on the advice of MaximillianBrett, Hayes took a job as the barman at TheUnitySociety, while gradually building up an imports business and gaining connections on both sides of the law. When prohibition started in 1919, the activities of his imports business became too hard to explain away, so he created the identity of JonathanGray, and sold the business to him. As a cover, he stayed on as the steward of the tea room, serving FruitTea``s. While he was capable of getting the alcohol himself, he made a point of paying his money to TheMob like a good boy - and has been known to help them out when their sources fail. Alessi has been heard to call Hayes his "best customer - except for that nice man JonathanGray". Hayes has managed to stay on the mob's good side, with the exception of JuniorAlessi, who sent him a biblical death threat during ''TheAngelOfDeath''. During ''ThinkOfTheChildren'', Hayes was unfortunate enough to witness a nightgaunt bursting out of a cellar. Ever since, he prefers to stay indoors, and views open skies with suspicion. During ''AndTheRockCriedOut'', Hayes received a death threat from corrupt policemen, this time in the form of the "death" of Jonathan Gray. Taking this as a sign that the police were no longer friendly to his exploits, Hayes sold the business to JimmyBartlett and began a life of leisure on the back of a life insurance policy he took out on Gray. He applied for and quickly received membership of the society; a cruel person might say this is because his customers were his only friends. He invested heavily in the Websters' silver business, restoring his reputation within the family - at least, those parts with short memories or thin pocket-books. When the stock markets crashed, the value of silver stayed high; and though Hayes lost heavily in his higher-risk investments he still had plenty left. His 50th birthday party was held at the club, with his private stocks of legal, pre-prohibition alcohol, and is a night that few remember. Hayes is a liar, a cheat, a coward and a hypocrite - but in times of crisis he tends to forget all that and do the decent thing despite himself. Hayes has never married - any woman who would accept him once they find out who he is, isn't good enough for him. Hayes always - '''always''' - wears gloves. He keeps a small block of clay on him, wrapped in waxed paper. <>Significant Skills (i.e. any with variable default or with non-starting level) || Accounting || 20 |||| Bargain || 50 |||| Biology || 5 || || Chemistry || 5 |||| Conceal || 90 / 80 |||| Credit Rating || 35 || || Disguise || 20 |||| Dodge || 28 |||| Fast Talk || 90 || || Hide || 20 |||| Locksmith || 46 / 25 |||| Persuade || 39 / 30 || || Pharmacy || 16 |||| Psychology || 10 |||| Sneak || 20 || || Spot Hidden|| 26 / 25 |||| Mob Lore || 6 |||| Library Use || 35 / 25 || |||||||||||||||||| || Firearms || Handgun || 23 / 20 |||| Languages || English || 45 || || || Shotgun || 33 / 30 |||| || Italian || 10 || <>Posessions He owns two small, easily concealable handguns; one he keeps in a book in the Tea Room, the other in the glove compartment of his car. He also keeps a shotgun strapped under the desk in the Tea Room. He keeps a two-bedroom house on Arnold Way (number 463), one far too nice for a barman to afford; and he drives a very nice sedan. Since CohenUnderground, he tends to keep a length of rope and a carbide lamp in the trunk of his car. In AndTheRockCriedOut, it was revealed that Hayes has access to a case of 12 grenades. It wasn't revealed to any of the other characters, though. <>Relationships (with TheCharacters) || EricColigny || Hayes takes advantage of their friendship, but it means more to him than he realises. || || JackProctor || Hayes knows better than to call him [[Jackie]]. Sometimes it's nice to go where ''someone'' knows your name... || || LisaDaVinci || Lisa is important to Toni, so she's important to Hayes. She reminds him too much of his own family for him to like her on her own merits. Seeing Lisa with Toni makes Hayes question whether he could have found a woman who'd have accepted him. || || EthanLocke || A man of expensive tastes - excellent. || || RobertJohnson || He drinks. Good for him. || || JuliusErlich || He pays well that equipment, and he doesn't ask where it came from. || || AlsoudHassam || Of late, Alsoud's been shaping up into not only a good customer, but a possible business partner for Mr. Gray; one with whom he might move into the vacuum left by Clement Greer's disappearance. Hayes wonders what they drink in Egypt, and whether the boys in Boston could get it. || || RebeccaSwarovski || Rich, and a drinker. Excellent. || || BenitoTorelli || Hayes trusts Torelli's judgement, though not necessarily his character. || || DavidSchreiber || Introduced himself by asking for rum, which is a good start. Looks like he has plenty of money to splash around, too. ||
