A (licensed) doctor and member of TheUnitySociety who left with his wife to move to New York late in 1913, Joseph Carey was kidnapped and transformed into a goat-headed man by T P Burnham's TransmogrificationMachine. Thanks to the actions of TheCharacters in TheGreatestShowOnEarth, he was restored to an ordinary human form, and has dedicated himself to tracking down other victims of Burnham and his machine. He now lives with his wife in a comfortable home opposite 12 Devon Lane where the machine itself is kept.

Carey regards himself as the keeper of a great evil. He is strong-willed, and won't let TheCharacters use the machine without very good cause - but he is sympathetic to others who've been transformed by evil forces, so it wouldn't be impossible (though they'd have to get AlsoudHassam's key, too). Having had his life altered forever by them machine, he go to great lenghts to protect it from misuse - if someone were to break into the crate in which the machine is stored, he would certainly come after them.
