The investigations of TheUnitySociety showed that he was using the TransmogrificationMachine on unfortunate people to populate his freak show.  He was surprised while (it is assumed) attempting to gift himself with greater strength with which to combat TheCharacters, and transformed into a freakish mass of tentacles, antennae, slime and miscellaneous organs, which was then shot by BenitoTorelli.
