Locke and Caius was originally Davenport and Caius, after the two Englishmen who came to America in the 1900s to practise law. The senior partner, LawrenceDavenport died early in 1922, and GeoffreyCaius was not keen to lose his clients to StokeAndBurrell, so when he met EthanLocke almost straight of Harvard Law School he offered him a generous salary to be Caius' junior partner. Locke was impressed by the money and the job title, so he took the offer.
The cleaner-cum-secretary, Mrs. Winters, is slightly older than Caius, superstitious and a compulsive tidier, much to the distraction of both Locke and Caius.
Though Davenport had a great variety of clients, few have contacted the firm since his death except to pay the retainers, and Locke has been largely free to pursue his own legal interests. Davenport's notes are heaped in a huge oak cupboard, and Locke has barely touched them. Mrs. Winters won't touch the pile, and she scowls at Locke both for allowing the untidiness to go on and for disturbing a dead man's business.
