Other characters needed:
Editor of TheUnityTimesChronicle
- local church men
- Possible journalistic source of oddities (if we don't have a journalist PC)
<<< Between RobertaHenry and EugeneHazzard we probably have sufficient journalist NPCs -- BenChalmers >>> <<< I think we can probably ditch the whole "other characters needed" list by now -- SimonBooth >>>
Moved by SimonBooth on Tue 23 Sep 2003
<<<Did I Kill Reese? I think he was in the basement but I could be wrong -- BenChalmers>>> <<< IIRC, That's what we assumed. -- SimonBooth >>> <<< Yes, but we never knew for sure. -- Steve McIntyre >>>
Wherein the PreviouslyInUnity page is mooted, and journalists are discussed at length. (Moved by RobHague, 2003-03-13)
<<< For the Journalist, see ShadowTheatre Episode 3 --- BenChalmers >>>
<<< Is that Foreshadowing? Does that make Ben the Foreshadowing King? -- AldenSpiess >>>
<<< Did I miss that bit, or did we burn it down? -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< The appearence of said journalist was put on hold (just because the PCs ended one week's session saying they were going to the papers didn't mean they actually went at the beginning of the next session -- BenChalmers >>>
<<< Righty ho. -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< I guess that the journalist shoes are now filled (or, at least, occupied) by EugeneHazzard, and hence we can remove the entry from the list, and junk this discussion. We also seem to have a couple of "churchmen", so that entry can probably go to. Any objections? -- RobHague >>>
<<< Yep. I didn't really do an epilogue for UnearthlyGoode, but if I had, it would have had Eugene not turning up for work in it. I may do a (sort-of) DodgsonDiscusses to fill that gap. -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< Ah - said shoes are vacant again. So, junk the discussion, but leave the entry on the list? -- RobHague >>>
<<< Sounds a good plan to me. You never know, he may reoccur
-- SimonBooth >>>
<<< Even if he doesn't, we'll need some journalistic contact. Anyway, if no-one says anything in the next few hours, I'll do the agreed cutting and pasting. -- RobHague >>>
<<< Can I suggest some 'ongoing narrative' (maybe PreviouslyInUnity) page on which things like NPCs going missing, dying, basically any changes in Unity that don't happen in a game (and preferably with links to games in the right places) which is updated every time such an update is made somewhere else, so we don't have to search through big tables trying to spot changes when these things happen? -- StevenKitson >>>
<<< Good plan; UnityHistory has some of this, but I think events from the start of the game deserve more details; I'll create the page. -- RobHague >>>
Discussion of ordering... (Moved by RobHague, 2003-03-03)
<<< The second column is "Society Member" -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< Alphabetical order, please -- Steve McIntyre >>>
<<< Sorry -- RobHague >>>
<<< I was going to say, "wow! you're more bored than I am!.
Then I wasn't, because sort(1) is my friend, too.
Then I noticed John Brown. Now I'm confused. -- SimonBooth >>>
Moved by SimonBooth, then by RobHague, on 31 Jan 03.
<<< yes, sorry, my bad. -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< No problem. I have to say, though, that the name "NonPlayerCharacterGraveyard" could be misinterpretted...
Another question; where to we put this discussion when we've done with it? -- RobHague >>>
<<< Why, the NonPlayerCharactersGraveyardGraveyard, of course
-- SimonBooth >>>
Discussion of Locks - Moved by SimonBooth
<<< Note also that being dead is insufficient for people to assume that any lock has been removed -- BenChalmers >>>
<<< Fairy nuff. Fixed. -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< Given that we have a Status column here, is BirthsDeathsAndMarriages redundant? -- RobHague >>>
<<< at most 1/3 redundant. "Status: born" seems obvious, and "Status: married " somewhat unfair. We probably don't need death dates here, though. -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< I think it's useful to have at least an alive/dead flag here, as it prevents situations like "You walk into the bar, and bump into HenryMaxwell, that dock worker you met a few months back" "Didn't he die in a freak tentacle accident?" "Oh yes. Oops.". I think a date here is fine, and perhaps more details on BirthsDeathsAndMarriages, which is meant more as colour than as useful reference material. -- RobHague >>>
<<< I agree an alive/dead flag is useful - but a wide fourth field makes the rest of the columns wrap on my screen, so as a cosmetic thing I'd prefer dates to be in BM&D. It's not important. -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< How 'bout combining the "lock" and "Status" columns? -- RobHague >>>
<<< That was the first layout
-- SimonBooth >>>
<<< Fair enough. I've removed dates, as these can be easily discovered from the linked-to scenario page... -- RobHague >>>
Discussion of TheMayor - moved by StevenKitson
<<< I would have thought the reporter would be more appropriate -- BenChalmers >>>
<<< I feel not, for various reasons. Assuming for a second that the allegations are true, a reporter on the Chronicle's staff is more likely to want to bring the truth out. The Chronicle, as a conservative newspaper, is also more likely to attract the kind of reporter who would investigate a Democratic mayor for impropriety in the first place. Wrote StevenKitson. >>>
<<< I ought to point out that the Democrats before Roosevelt were seen as the country party i.e. conservative. IANAHistorianOfAmericanPolitics and I may have the time wrong. Also RI is quite Republican as a state at this time. MikePitt >>>
<<< From an aesthetic point of view I think it works better if the reporter not work for the newspaper whose function is basically 'the scandal-sheet'. StevenKitson >>>
<<< (Following conversation in car... can we change his name to something more appropriate? Also I've been looking around and think he almost certainly should be a Republican. MikePitt)>>>
<<< I think the name is appropriate: the right mix of pompousness and rotund self-inportance. Regarding his party, I thought the Democrats mostly held sway in the towns, with the Republican bias of the state coming from the overly-represented farming areas? Besides which there are scurrilous rumours than his election might not have been totally according to the principles of democracy on which this great country was founded. What are your suggestions? -- StevenKitson >>>
<<< My objection to the name is mainly its origin. I never thought Steven aspired to Dickens... -- BenChalmers >>>
<<< Mine is that it isn't a real name and doesn't sound like one. If there is a genuine Pumblechook somewhere in the world I'll withdraw my objection... -- MikePitt >>>
<<< Hoe do people feel about 'Bromptongrove' (I think it maybe sounds a bit too much like a place-name, but I'll try to come up with something better). -- StevenKitson >>>
<<< Punnington? -- StevenKitson >>>
<<< OK MikePitt >>>
<<< Shall we update the character and delete the discussion? -- MikePitt >>>
Discussion of EvangelineProster - moved by SimonBooth
<<< Rotary was men only 'till 1987. In fact ladies' auxillaries were only authorised in 1921. The Inner Wheel wasn't founded until 1923. See http://www.rotarywomen.org/timeline/index.htm -- BenChalmers >>>
<<< how about the Women's Co-operative Guild? -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< Works for me. I'd imagine that she organises vital cake-baking and cleaning activities for the Rotary Society, and that kind of thing as well. -- AldenSpiess >>>
Discussion of the UnityPoliceForce - moved by SimonBooth
<<< The Sheriff in Rhode Island will basically be the DA, won't he? -- StevenKitson >>>
<<< http://www.risp.state.ri.us/HISTORY.HTM is interesting. There is no state police until 1925, so policing would be local. Anyone got any better info? -- MikePitt >>>
<<< Contemporary policing seems to be police departments with Captains, Superintendants etc in cities and sheriffs in 'counties'. As Unity is quite a big city, it even then must have had a decently-organised (if local) police department for it to be in any way effectual at all (ie, not just a Sheriff and deputies in a jailhouse on the main street).
Given the atmosphere we're going to I think we might consider basing it on the police force seen in for example The Untouchables but on a smaller scale. -- StevenKitson >>>
