Discussion of TheTownOfUnity
The ParishChurch
<<< If not catholic, please move -- SimonBooth >>> <<< Isn't this the one on Church Street, on the edge of the slums? If so, yes it is Catholic, and it's also on the map, so we can loose the '*' -- AldenSpies >>> <<< We don't know - the ParishChurch is Steve's, and he's said he hadn't imagined it being catholic (see discussion in CalvisitChurch). The one on Church Street is definitely a catholic church, but it might not be St. Adrian's. -- SimonBooth >>>
The old, flat building list:
<<< The police force and the railroad stations aren't a single place of note, but an organisation spread across several physical locations. Do we need to handle these differently? -- AldenSpiess >>>
<<< The railway stations seem to fit here OK; the PoliceForce probably doesn't. I've added another list, "Organisations", below. -- RobHague >>>
<<< I wonder whether a tree structure would be the answer here - something like
The TownHall
- Places of worship
- Old Unity Station
- Riverside District Station
-- SimonBooth>>>
<<< I can see that working. Do you think we should include catergory headers as well? For example:
Newspapers
The TownHall
Places of worship
- Old Unity Station
- Riverside District Station
Oh, and while we're at it, I think we can probably ditch the "we need..." comment, and replace it with generic entries in the list (like the synagogue was until it got a name). -- RobHague >>>
<<< I think the difference between that and what I suggested is that the categories are in bold
-- SimonBooth >>>
<<< And the fact that non-building stuff is in there; it's a list-of-stuff, as opposed to a list-of-mostly-places. But otherwise, yes. Basically, I agree. -- RobHague >>>
<<< Right - if no-one objects before I get bored tomorrow, I'll do this then. -- SimonBooth >>>
The older, two-category building list:
Institutions:
The TownHall
The NationalBank of Rhode Island
The JenkinMausoleum
And... <<<
- A theatre?
A cinema??? -- SimonBooth >>>
Other buildings
The Calvinist Church of Unity
Parish Church of St Adrian
Aristotle's CoffeeHouse
ChezHenri - expensive French Restaurant
Bork - Swedish restaurant
- the synagogue
And the discussion thereof:
<<< I'm not sure what distiction we're drawing between "Institutions" and "Other Buildings" -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< I see Institutions as being a social function which may or may not have a building or buildings (e.g. the police force), whereas 'other buildings' should be a place of interest, which may or may not have a function (e.g. a coffee shop). I think I'd argue that the airfield should be in 'other buildings', because it doesn't form a significant part of Unity's social fabric, but you could easily argue the other way. You could argue the synagogue was part of the social fabric, but I don't see it being a significant part, so I'm happy for it to stay in 'other buildings' -- AldenSpiess >>>
<<< oooh, contraversial. What about the other churches?
-- SimonBooth >>> <<< So, would that make it three categories, then? The division between "Institutions" and "Other Buildings" seems a bit arbitary in places, and I'm not sure it's all that useful. How 'bout mixing them all into a big, alphabetised list, "Places of Note"? I've done it like that, but added the old (split) list to the graveyard. -- RobHague >>>
<<< looks good to me. added the Hat Shop. -- SimonBooth >>>
Locations around Unity - moved by SimonBooth
<<< What sort of agriculture would be around Unity? would there be cane fields, or would that all come in by rail? What about corn? I'd like a field of something tall. -- SimonBooth >>> <<< Things can hide in fields of tall crops. Can't we have something that grows close to the ground? Pinapples, maybe. -- RobHague >>> <<< Looks from google like we have corn. Makes things a bit more Steven King than I was going for, but hey. s/cane/corn/g , I suppose -- SimonBooth >>>
Discussion of Unity Gaol - now LincolnDistrictPenitentiary - moved by SimonBooth
<<< Anyone think of a better name? I think this should be near VillersHill -- MikePitt >>>
<<< Funky spelling of Jail is always good. I want to call it hellsomething, but I think that's just GoNY repeating on me. -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< LincolnDistrictPenitentiary? To the east of East 16th Street and 3rd Avenue East -- MikePitt >>>
<<<Probably accurate, but I miss the "Gaol" bit.
Probably sensible then to put Villers Hill PD on the opposite corner; but we only have enough staff for 3 stations, really -- SimonBooth >>> <<< Can we avoid calling it 'gaol' - I constantly pronounce 'gaol' as 'goal' in my head, and you can see how annoying that would be. --AldenSpiess >>>
<<< It would be like being inhabited by <insert decent football team here>'s fans. But if it's constantly happening, what can we do to stop it? -- SimonBooth>>>
<<< We could try not making jail a goal? -- AldenSpiess >>>
<<< Nooooo. Jails are boring. Gaols are interesting. -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< I hate goals and everything to do with football. Let's call it a penitentiary. That's got pleasant 'home-made shivs and breaking rocks' overtones. -- AldenSpiess >>>
<<< How 'bout going with LincolnDistrictPenetentiary, but having another nickname, say HellsTrashcan, that is used by the local scum-and-villiany element? -- RobHague >>>
<<< Hell's Bedpan? -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< Ok LincolnDistrictPenitentiary it is. The nick name is up for grabs. Sorry about gaol, for some reason I'd rather not prod too much I seem to nearly always spell it that way now!
When we have the nickname I'll purge references to UnityGaol. -- MikePitt >>>
<<< Hell's Island? Hell's Asshole? Hell's Deep? -- Steve McIntyre >>>
<<< Hell's Gaol? -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< Hell's Hazif? -- RobHague >>>
<<< as a serious suggestion, Hell's Cauldron ? -- SimonBooth >>>
<<< Looks like HellsCauldron is it; appropriate for a melting-pot of criminality. -- RobHague >>>
<<< Graveyard this then? MikePitt >>>
Maps
Moved by MikePitt
<<< I have edited the latter to include Unity at EditedMap -- MikePitt >>>
<<< Just to note that Mike's edited map pretty much sets the street plan for unity. It looks about the size I exdpect too. One question - it looks like the town is centred around the railroad rather than the river, its a trivial issue and one that doesn't actually need fixing, but was this intentional? -- BenChalmers >>>
<<< To be perfectly honest it ought to go NW too but the problem is that the word Moshassuck gets in the way. I could try to move the words but I'd rather retrofit the town to the map
My view is that it started at a bridging point (the "o") and grew west and east in the shadow of the hills (Jenks to the SW and Villers to the NE) but since the RR has grown more near that. I also like the idea of the area SW of the river being seen as "Old Unity" and NE along the railroad as "New Unity" While I am here shall we delete the comments after this? -- MikePitt >>>
<<< I suggest the location be where the O in Lincoln crosses the Moshassuck river near Jenks hill, north of Providence. The rail road north from Providence could be extended, terminating in the town center. -- BenChalmers >>>
<<< Isn't that road a rail road? The others appear to be. MikePitt >>>
<<< Oh yeah. Fixed. BenChalmers >>>
<<< I asked "Any chance of the NYNHHRR running to Unity? A railroad would be quite likely in a University town and quite useful" -- I guess that'd be a yes. Can I suggest we extend it North so it rejoins the Worcester line as well? MikePitt >>>
Moved by MikePitt
<<< Hangman's Hill seems out of idiom to me -- MikePitt >>>
<<< But HPL had a Hangman's Brook so I'm wrong http://www.gizmology.net/lovecraft/works/dreams.htm Still sounds more Boot Hill than CoC -- MikePitt >>>
<<< Most towns have somewhere a bit like Hangman's Hill. The name's a bit cheesy, and the location probably slightly overdone, but Unity should have a stretch of abandoned scrubland with a bad rep. I was drawing more on the Arkham side of things, which tends to paint places in a gothic light -- AldenSpiess>>>
<<< It's useful for plot and players to have somewhere where the Mob can meet, and people can dump bodies. And anywhere that gets used like that will be avoided, and get a bad reputation and rumours of hauntings. I've never read any Lovecraft, so can't speak on ethos. I'd argue it should be there, but doesn't have to be connected with anything occult -- AldenSpiess >>>
<<< I've no objection to Hangman's Hill... I would prefer a different name, but can't come up with one (And I once set an entire campaign in a road called Gallows Hill... so I can't really talk). And its nice to know there is one place in town we can pretty much be certain is free from hauntings and unspeakable evil (evil abhores a cliche) -- BenChalmers >>>
<<< Changed HangmansHill to VillersHill: less cheesy -- AldenSpiess >>>
<<< Content now fixed - can we lose this discussion now? -- AldenSpiess >>>
