The Staff

<<< Following Frank Short's resignation in DeadInTheWater, Det. Lt. DavidGeorge has been promoted to Lloyd McDonall's deputy. >>>

Lloyd and Frank have a secretary each, and there are 2 for the lieutenants. The typist pool is shared. The admin staff normally only work the day shift.

The force runs 24 hours, with a night shift, a day shift and a 'rest' rotation, so at any time 2 lieutenants will be on duty, with 2 sergeants reporting to each of them. Each sergeant runs a squad of 5 men. The chief and deputy normally work the day shift, but will work whatever hours are needed for important cases.

The lieutenants run the normal 'serious' business of the force: murder, major fraud, blackmail, etc. Any case that gets close to the front page of the paper, or anything that could affect the normal routine of the town gets the attention of the Deputy Chief, or the Chief, or both's close personal attention - otherwise they are mostly kept busy dealing with TheMayor, the law courts, and running the force. Many say the mayor has too much say over the appointment of the lieutenants, though not to the faces of Lts. George or Parsons.

The sergeants handle most of the petty crime themselves - handing a report to the lieutenants for rubber-stamping. Most investigations will be little more than hauling the likely suspects down to the station for a chat, or having a quick look round the house of the local major criminals. The police have a fairly good idea who's behind most of the petty crime in Unity, and provided that the Mob's not involved, they have a pretty good cleanup rate.

The UniformedOfficers tend toward the unimaginative jobsworth, though they're not too bad at dealing with everyday crimes.
