A place to store links to mythos books that TheCharacters find. Only information which is known to those who have not read the book should be on this page; anything else should be on the linked page, so that people whose characters haven't read the book can avoid it. It's probably useful to include at least a brief physical description, the current location, and the language in which it is written - the latter two facts are essential to determine if a particular character can read it.
There are rules for reading books on the HouseRules page.

TheMontgomeryScottManuscript (TheCasket)
This was amongst the personal effcets of the unfortunate ProfessorMontgomeryScott, handed over to AlsoudHassam to sort through after the former had been brutally murdered.
The manuscript is not a book, but a collection of pages, held together between two carved boards joined by bolts and wingnuts (sort of like a flower press). The notes include copies of pages from an Arabic manuscript of unknown provenence, actual pages from a dark-ages Latin manuscript, and modern notes in English, made by ProfessorMontgomeryScott.
The manuscript is currently in the vault of the MuseumOfAntiquities at JenkinUniversity.
<<< At least, I think it is, unless AlsoudHassam kept hold of it. Tristan? -- RobHague >>>
<<< Alsoud placed it in the secure storeroom at the museum - it's fragile and he's not sure the Library would be suitable for storing it. >>>
<<< Given the discussion over at TheLibrary re. a locked "rare books" cupboard, would Alsoud have relented? -- RobHague >>>
TheRingOfTheShadowKing (ShadowTheatre)
Script to the play, translated from the original Norse Des Ring des Shatten Konig by Dr LyellMerritt.
No history or physical details yet...
Summary (known to all characters, as described by the unfortunate RobertJohnson):
- Takes 1 day to skim read, (1/1d4 SAN loss)
- 1d4 weeks to read fully
- Contains a ritual to summon the shadow king (he who walks in shadows)
- The ritual involves a pentagram; the larger the pentagram, the larger the beast summoned
- Much discussion of a Nordic rune
- The ritual requires human sacrifices
- If used as a reference book, adds 5% to Mythos or 10% to Occult.
<<< If I remember how this bit works properly... -- Steve McIntyre >>>
Real detail in TheRingOfTheShadowKing, things that man was not meant to know...
- A compilation of essays and bibliographical details about a wide range ofarcane signs, symbols and seals. It used to contain a page describing the seal of the shadow king, but that was removed and eaten during SignedSealedDelivered/
- As a reference adds 10% to Mythos, 10% to occult when looking up an arcane symbol
- At the GM's discression, instead of (or as well as) providing information on a given sign or seal a successful use of this book will point to other manuscripts which may prove useful in better understanding the symbol's significance.
This book is now in the library, having been rescued during SignedSealedDelivered <<< I'm sure more details will follow -- Steve McIntyre >>> <<< Is this in TheLibrary in TheUnitySociety or somwhere else? -- MikePitt >>>
The BoilerManual (UnearthlyGoode)
- Typed pages, in plain and simple English, professionally bound in unmarked black leather
- First half describes making a boiler
- Second half describes summoning "The creature" into it.
- If used as a reference book, adds 5% to Mythos or 10% to Mechanical Repair (Boilers).
<<< I forget - did anyone say they were reading this? -- SimonBooth >>> <<< 10% to Mech repair boilers. Now who is that a dig at. Huh -- MikePitt >>>
TheBurkeLabJournal (TheAnathemaDevice)
- Handwritten in dense copperplate on parchment, bound with red wool.
Describes Louise Burke's many experiments with the HistoryMachine.
- Most experiments seem to involve seeing something hideous.
- Most subjects were comonplace objects found in Unity.
- Louise Burke clearly decends into madness as the journal goes on.
- Journal runs from late 1849. Last date is start of Jan, 1850.
- Ends with an exclamation that Louise will study herself.
- Takes a day to skim, 2 weeks to read.
Currently in possession of Lisa DaVinci who has read it.
TheJournalOfWilliamSmith (TheAngelOfDeath)
- An aging manuscript, quite possibly documenting a settlement on the site of Unity long before Unity's founding.
- Whereabouts unknown
The KnigaIvana (TheBookStopsHere)
- The cover is cracking black leather, bound in silver, and forms the disguise for the cognac in the Tea Room.
The pages were cut out by HayesWebster and are now in the posession of OldAlex, a hobo who sometimes used to sleep behind the society
- Originally written in the 9th century by "a russian monk"
Stolen from ArkadyKoldun late 1919
KnigaIvana means "Book of Ivan", or something similar
The BoucherTomb (CohenUnderground)
- Not a book but a tomb. No writing.
- Inscriptions and sculpture inside the tomb, especially in lower crypt, describe some sort of dance or ritual.
In church yard of Church Of The Holy Cross
RebeccaSwarovski also has photographs of the carvings, which may be sufficient for study, although they might count as a translation. These have been edited to give context and position. A selection of extracts or individual photos wouldn't be sufficient.
AstrologikalNotesOnTheGeometryOfEuclid (ThinkOfTheChildren)
- A 16th century, leather bound folio
- Used to summon (and, presumably, bind) a large, dark creature with bat-like wings and no face
The SerdtsePiyavka notes (HereBeDragons)
- A loose collection of papers in neat handwriting
Describes the SerdtsePiyavka and how to make NerveTonic
Given to TatianaAptekara to translate on Tuesday, 16th October 1923
The VoineaWolfNotes (HairApparent)
- A large collection of notes in Cyrillic, probably Moldovan
Apparently written by DrVoinea detailing his studies of werewolves
- Found in his hotel room and at the warehouse on Tuesday, 18th June 1924
<<< JackProctor is understandably interested in these, and we've sort of assumed he's been reading the voraciously since the, ahem, incident. However, he doesn's speak any Moldovan; has he (or anyone else) been able to get a translation into English? Or, failing that, classical Greek? -- RobHague >>>
The InkStainedBook (The Historical Re-enactment Society)
- Louise and Robert Burke's journal of their travels in Asia.
Details a machine to bind ElizabethEmai to a person, so they can SummonElizabethEmai
Currently in the hands of the ThreePetalsTriad
[Schattenbewohnerschutz] ([Signed Sealed Delivered])
A text written in an ancient germanic tounge, taken from the Unity Society Library during SignedSealedDelivered and since returned
- Before the relevent pages were eaten, Symbolica suggested that this book contained a wealth of information about the shadow king
GothickPoysons (BlackAndWhite)
- An anthology of historical poisons and potions from around the world.
- Mainly summarises other books, giving simple information on recipes, uses and symptoms.
RitesOfTheCultOfApollo (BlackAndWhite)
- Written in Greek, covers some mundane and not-so-mundane rituals and artifacts of the cult.
Contains details of the AngerOfApollo potion.
There is a bad English translation available also.
DieTeufelworte (WordsWillNeverHurtMe)
A leather-bound quarto on German occultism, described by MrDaimler as "rare, but not particularly valuable". Previously owned by FranzHoffer, then (via DaimlerAndSons) SarahCarpenter. Skimmed by RobertJohnson, then burnt in the back yard of 122 when it became apparent that it turned everyone who read it into sinister, german-ranting psychopaths.
